Stories from Harnett County Homes...“This program has allayed parents’ fears by providing encouragement and support in more ways than I can explain. My family is like many other families in Harnett County who are military. When a parent is absent from a child no matter what age, there is a disruption in his or her life. My educator has provided me with information on how to help my daughter cope with the absence of her father through fun family activities to deal with deployment. This program is essential to families’…” --Cameron,NC
An Educator was contacted recently by an enrolled family with limited English speaking abilities. Both parents were eager to learn more. The mother called experiencing back pain and did not know who to contact. This foreign born expectant mother, new to Harnett County, was unfamiliar with the area and the way prenatal care was provided. The family was immediately directed to the obstetrician. There was no serious complications. The next lesson provided was establishing medical homes and how to develop a plan in case of emergencies. Because of a fostered relationship the Educator impacted this family and the health of their unborn child.

One young mom recently participating in the program set a goal to complete her education. Childcare was determined to be a barrier to her accomplishing her goal. Relying on family members in the past, this mother needed the tools to find a better solution to her childcare needs. The educator connected and helped her communicate with the Department of Social Services as well as a Childcare Center close to her home that would provide transportation. The van picked the child up the following Monday. This Mother’s attendance and grades have improved since her son began childcare!

Divorce brings painful wounds and many transitions. So what can a parent do? How can they begin to heal, much less help their child? This was the question one father faced as he turned to PAT. PAT provided this father with educational lessons to help
him independently know how to help his child learn
important skills and most
importantly the educator was available between home
visits to answer questions and discuss concerns. In
addition to developmental skills the father learned how to
offer reassurance to his daughter, deal with her anxiety
due to the separation, guide and redirect behavior in a
positive way, become involved in the child’s play in an
intentional way to build their relationship and positive
communication, develop appropriate schedules and
routines, reaffirm the child, and respond to the child
appropriately through difficult parental exchanges all while
participating in PAT.
The educator recently visited with the father and he stated
that he continues to use the communication and behavior
strategies that he learned while participating in Parents as
Teachers even though his daughter is now in the second
grade and he is successfully co-parenting. --Dunn,NC
